The backpacker's love for San Cristobal

I hung out with William from the US, Maria from Denmark and an Aussie couple at various occiasons to find out what the town was like. The first thing to notice: it is crazy cheap. We paid around 5.5 euros a night and if we needed to pay more than 3 euros for food it was expensive. Tacos and empenadas were sold for around 30 cents each!
Other than that, the town is really cool. It is very hipstery in its own right, combining the Spanish, Mayan and Zapatista (Guerrilla guys) cultures. This translates to a lot of interesting art being all around the city to look at. The city in its own is even art, being so colourful and cosy.
The most interesting part of the city must be the market. It is a huge market in which you would easily get lost in, but also has its own style. No one screams to sell their product, the food is really clean in there and there is so incredibly much they sell. I went there about four times, every time discovered a new area and every time buying some new type of food I wanted to try.
The last two days I took two trips. The first one was to a village with only indigenous (Mayan) people living there. It was not a big town, however interestingly they are (forced to be) Christians. Their customs of praying is completely different and their churches, too. They buy as much candles as possible, light them on the floor and pray until the candles are burnt out. Weird but cool. In the second trip I took a boat tour in a canyon nearby. The canyon was kind of Norway meets Thailand: Norwegian fjordlands combined with the Thai flora, fauna and crazy fast boat captains. It was cool, saw my first monkeys, crane birds and my second crocodile there. :-)
After all of this, I decided to go to Guatemala. I have a lot of time and heard a lot of cool stories, so here I am! After a rough ride (the roads are much worse here), I arriced at lake Atitlan, a lake surrounded by three vulcanoes. Let's see what this place will bring!

Opa Van Tim:
Hallo Tim, weer eens jou website opgezocht en aan de hand van de atlas jouw reis te volgen.
Dus nu in Guatemala.
